Checking Your Setup Before a Video Interview

Five checks to run the day before an interview — not five minutes before it, which is the mistake almost everyone makes.

The cost of a technical failure in an interview is asymmetric in a way that is easy to underestimate. Nobody is rejected purely for a broken microphone, but the first three minutes get spent on apologies and troubleshooting instead of on you, the interviewer's attention starts from a worse place, and you begin flustered. That is a meaningful handicap for something you have prepared weeks for, caused by a fault that takes under a minute to find.

Timing is the part people get wrong. Running these checks five minutes before the call is barely better than not running them, because if you find a problem you have no time to fix it — you are choosing between joining late and joining broken. Run them the day before and a genuine fault becomes a solvable problem: you can find a different headset, borrow a webcam, or move to a machine that works.

One specific thing to check that people consistently miss: the device your call application will use is not necessarily the device your operating system considers default. Applications remember their own selection independently, so a headset you connected last week may still be selected in the app even though it is not currently plugged in. Confirming the hardware works is only half the job; confirming the app will use the right hardware is the other half.

  1. Open the live preview. Check the picture is sharp, that you are centred and lit from the front, and that what is behind you is what you want on camera.

    Pass: A clear, well-lit picture with you framed roughly centre and a background you are happy with.

    Fail: A black frame, the wrong camera selected, or a picture that is dark, backlit or badly framed.

    If it fails: Webcam not working in Teams, Zoom or Chrome — Fix the app-level camera selection, which is the usual cause.

  2. Watch the level meter while speaking normally, then record several seconds and play it back. Listen to how you actually sound, not just whether the meter moves.

    Pass: The meter responds well and your recorded voice is clear, close and free of hiss.

    Fail: No meter movement, a very quiet recording, or audible echo, hum or background noise.

    If it fails: Mic echo or background noise — Reduce echo and background noise before the call, not during it.

  3. Play the test tone through whatever you will actually use on the call, at the volume you will actually use.

    Pass: Clear sound from both channels at a comfortable level.

    Fail: Silence, one dead channel, or sound coming from a device you did not expect.

    If it fails: No sound from laptop speakers (Windows) — Get output working again and confirm the right device is selected.

  4. If you will wear a headset, test its microphone and both earpieces together — that combination is what a call uses, and Bluetooth headsets behave differently in call mode than in music mode.

    Pass: Microphone responds and both earpieces produce sound while the mic is active.

    Fail: Audio quality drops sharply when the microphone activates, or one earpiece goes silent in call mode.

    If it fails: Bluetooth headphones, no sound — Work through the Bluetooth profile switch that causes this.

  5. Confirm left and right are both working and not reversed. A dead channel is easy to miss because most speech is centred.

    Pass: Each side announces itself correctly from the correct ear.

    Fail: Both announcements from one ear, or nothing from one side.

    If it fails: Headphones only working in one ear — Find the dead side and determine whether it is the cable or the driver.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I run these checks?

The day before, not immediately before. Running them five minutes ahead means that if you find a fault you have no time to do anything about it. A day's notice turns a broken microphone from a disaster into an errand.

Everything works here but fails in Zoom or Teams. Why?

Because applications keep their own device selection and their own permissions, separately from the operating system. A working test here proves your hardware and drivers are fine, which narrows the problem to the app's settings. Open the app's audio and video settings and explicitly select the device you just tested.

Should I use a headset or my laptop's built-in microphone?

A headset microphone is almost always better, because it sits close to your mouth and picks up far less room echo. The main exception is a Bluetooth headset on a call: activating the microphone usually forces a switch to a narrow-bandwidth profile and audio quality drops noticeably in both directions. A wired headset avoids that trade-off entirely.

Why does my Bluetooth headset sound worse on calls than for music?

Because it switches profiles. For music it uses a high-bandwidth one-way profile; the moment the microphone is needed it switches to a much narrower two-way profile that carries both directions. The drop in quality is a property of the protocol, not a fault with your headset.

What should I check about my background and lighting?

Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with one behind you — a bright background makes the camera expose for it and leaves you in silhouette. Then look at what is actually in frame in the preview, which is the part people forget until it is on screen in front of an interviewer.

Is any of this recorded?

No. The camera preview is rendered directly in the page and the microphone is processed as a live stream. Nothing is encoded, saved or transmitted, and the record-and-playback clip exists only in your browser's memory until you close the tab.
