Xbox Controller Test

Check every button, trigger and stick on your Xbox Series or Xbox One controller, and catch drift early. Works over USB or Bluetooth on a PC — no console needed.

No controller — press a button to connect
Left stick · 0.00, 0.00
Right stick · 0.00, 0.00

Leave the sticks untouched — if a value moves away from 0.00 on its own, that is stick drift.

USB vs Bluetooth on Xbox controllers

Xbox controllers connect three ways, and the method matters:

A common gotcha: the original 2013 Xbox One controller has no Bluetooth at all, so it only tests over USB or with the wireless adapter.

Calibrating with the Xbox Accessories app

Unlike PlayStation, Xbox gives you a real calibration and firmware tool. On Windows, install the free Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store, connect the controller by USB, and you can:

  1. Update the controller firmware — this alone fixes a surprising number of stick and connection issues.
  2. Remap buttons and adjust trigger and stick sensitivity curves (Elite controllers get the deepest options).
  3. Test vibration motors.

Run the firmware update, then come back and re-test here to confirm the sticks rest at 0.00.

Microsoft warranty

Xbox controllers come with a 12-month limited warranty. If a controller drifts within that window, start a service request at the Xbox Support site — Microsoft has repaired or replaced drifting controllers, and a class-action over Xbox drift kept the issue in the spotlight. Out of warranty, replacing the thumbstick module (or fitting a Hall-effect module) is the lasting fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test an Xbox controller on PC without a console?

Yes. Connect it by USB or Bluetooth and press a button on this page. The browser reads every button, trigger and stick.

Why won't my Xbox controller pair over Bluetooth?

Only Xbox controllers with the wrap-around bumper plastic (Series and 2016+ One S) have Bluetooth. The original 2013 One controller has none. Also make sure you are pairing over Bluetooth and not looking for the Xbox Wireless radio, which needs a separate adapter.

How do I calibrate an Xbox controller?

Install the Xbox Accessories app on Windows, connect by USB, and update the firmware. Elite controllers also expose stick and trigger sensitivity curves. After updating, re-test the sticks here.

Does updating the firmware fix drift?

It can fix drift caused by firmware or deadzone bugs and is always worth trying first. Mechanical drift from a worn stick will remain and needs a hardware repair.

Is my Xbox controller under warranty for drift?

Xbox controllers have a 12-month limited warranty. If yours drifts within that period, file a service request with Xbox Support before paying for a repair.

Why do the triggers read as pressed buttons here?

Xbox triggers are analog and report a 0-to-1 value. This view lights them once pressed past about 10%; the underlying analog range still works, which you can confirm in-game or in the Accessories app.
