Mic Too Quiet? How to Boost Microphone Volume
Quick answer: If your mic is too quiet, raise the input volume in Windows sound settings, enable Microphone Boost, and reduce the distance to the mic. App-specific volume and a failing cable can also keep levels low.
See your current level: open the microphone test and speak — the meter shows how loud you actually are.
1. Raise the input volume
Go to Settings → System → Sound, select your microphone under Input, and push the input volume up toward 100%. This alone fixes many quiet mics.
2. Turn on Microphone Boost
Open More sound settings → Recording, double-click your mic, go to the Levels tab, and raise Microphone Boost (try +10 dB, then +20 dB if needed). Add only as much as you need, since too much boost adds background hiss.
3. Check position and app settings
Move closer and speak across the mic rather than far away. Then check the app you use — Zoom, Discord and Teams each have their own input volume, and an automatic gain setting can make levels jump around, so try turning it off for a steady level.
Still too quiet?
Reseat the plug or try another port; a USB mic may have its own gain knob or a mute switch. If the level is still low everywhere, the cable or mic may be failing. If Windows does not detect changes at all, see our guide on a microphone not working on Windows 11.
Confirm the level
Re-run the microphone test and our microphone test walkthrough to confirm the meter now reaches a healthy level when you speak normally.
