How to test your keyboard

  1. Click anywhere on this page once so it has focus.
  2. Press every key, one by one. Each lights up green and stays marked.
  3. Any key that never lights up is dead. A key that stays lit after release is stuck.
  4. Use Reset to start a fresh test.

Common keyboard problems

A key does nothing

If it never registers here, the switch or membrane under that key has likely failed. On laptops, debris under the keycap is a common cause.

A key types twice (chatter)

If one press shows as two in the last-key readout, the switch is "chattering" — common on worn mechanical switches.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a dead key?

Press every key once. Any key that never turns green is not registering.

Does this detect key ghosting?

Hold several keys at once — if some don't light up together, your keyboard has limited rollover (ghosting).
